Song of the Week: Marlene Enright moves us with new single ‘123’

“I was thinking that my destiny // Would fall from the clouds right at my feet // I’d pick enough from the apple tree // And I’d go on the count of 123” Marlene Enright closed out a busy year with an appearance at RTE’s Other Voices at the end of 2016. She is now preparing to take on 2017 with the release of her new single, ‘123’, due out on February 3rd. Juxtaposing gospel roots with a contemporary pop feel, ‘123’ channels the golden age of RNB with its work song feel and infectious groove. Enright’s ‘china doll’ vocal recalls individualistic musicians like Bjork, Stevie Nicks and Joanna Newsom whilst retaining her own brand of indie pop throughout. Examining the transition between childhood naivety and adult introspection ‘123’ takes a closer look at uncertainty and decision making. Enright’s latest single is taken from her upcoming debut solo album, ‘Placemats and Second Cuts’ due out on March 24th. She tours Ireland through March and April in support of the album. Listen to ‘123’ below Live Dates Levis Corner House, Ballydehob – Friday 3rd March The White Horse, Ballincollig – Friday 24th March – €12 The Mariner, Bantry – Saturday 25th March – €10 The Spirit Store, Dundalk – Wednesday 5th April Whelans, Dublin – Thursday 6th April – €12 Dolans, Limerick – Friday 7th April – €10 Coughlan’s, Cork – Thursday 13th April -€12 St. John’s Theatre, Listowel – Friday 28th April –...

Robert Green thinks we should yell more after listening to More Than Machines’ new single ‘Youth’

Review by Bobby Green “We are the youth The forgotten truth This is where we’ve been The whole time The millennium it gleams In our minds” Normally it’s a hangover that kicks me in the face and knocks me sideways this early in the year, but I’ve just listened to the forthcoming single ‘Youth’ by More Than Machines and it’s the wake up call punk pop needs. It’s about time the youth started shouting at us old bastards again, we’ve become lazy and complacent. Before any snobs (there are many) start with ‘punk pop’ or sub genre this and that, I class nearly anything sounding remotely like punk after CRASS as punk pop, and why not? I love this genre, it was called post punk in my day and it’s what a huge amount of my record collection consists of. But to be honest, after Wiz from Mega City Four passed away I never felt the love I once had for this genre until recent years. More Than Machines started out life as Beware Of You and released two EP’s under that name before changing to More Than Machines and ‘Youth’ is an introduction to this new change. When I asked them about the name change they said “With regards to the name change, over the two years we’ve been a band we’ve grown as musicians and people. We felt that the name we had previously was tied to a past that just isn’t us anymore. We were a band that just played music for the sake of it at the time. As the two years passed we began to take what we were doing more and more seriously and so we decided to make a fresh start and change our name as a representation of that. Our sound also changed slightly too. People are losing the ability to think for themselves and are relying on others for direction. We don’t believe that people are truly like that, we believe that we must be ‘more than machines’. We are, after all, humans with the potential for great things. Everyone has the potential to be a leader in whatever they choose. Machines don’t become leaders, people do. We are not machines, we are ‘more than machines’.” Youth was recorded with Michael Richards in Trackmix Studios in Dublin, Ireland and mixed and mastered by Bert & Eric Poncet of Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! and Alias Studios in Paris, France. It has everything you want from a 3 minute blast of noise, attitude, roaring guitar, angst ridden vocals with a chorus you can sing along to. There’s only a handful of bands...

Song of the Week: Jonny Rep’s ‘Call Me Soon’

Song of the Week: Jonny Rep’s ‘Call Me Soon’

Jonny Rep started life as an amalgamation of Cork bands LMNO Pelican, The Shanks, Semi and Rulers of the Planet. The five-piece are now set to release their long player Cold Sunbeam in the spring of 2017 and are giving the world a taster with single ‘Call Me Soon’. ‘Call Me Soon’ is an ode to 90’s rock bands such as The Stone Roses, Smashing Pumpkins and Weezer with its percussion and riff driven signature. Mixing elements of psychedelia with skater rock and West Coast vibes ‘Call Me Soon’ is Jonny Rep’s calling card. Calling themselves after an obscure 70’s Dutch footballer Jonny Rep use their wry sense of humour to buffer the more serious messages carried in their music all the while creating some seriously good music in the process. As we bear witness to a period of extensive change Jonny Rep’s ‘Call Me Soon’ version of alternative rock is fresh and on point. The system is broken they tell us and as we look around we can’t help but agree. Jonny Rep’s single ‘Call Me Soon’ is out January 27 from their forthcoming album Cold Sunbeam set for release February...
