Video of the Day: Joey Ryan with ‘Violet’

‘Violet’ is the new release from Cork musician Joey Ryan. Violet is a soulful track taken from his 2016 release Fall Through the Night, which saw Ryan refine his sound with the help of Cork based producer Christian Best in Monique Studios. Having relocated to Berlin, Germany in mid 2016, ‘Violet’ sees a collaboration with the Berlin based Kopperkollectiv who have previously worked with many successful German acts through their Berlin Open Stage music video series. Shot in Berlin city and surrounding area during summer 2017, Swedish dance artist and choreographer Siri Elmqvist created a modern interpretive dance sequence to interpret the character of Violet, bringing an edgy and dark element to the video, in contrast to sonic color of the music. Joey Ryan is currently in the studio recording the first tracks of what will become his next album. Watch ‘Violet’...

Song of the Day: Tanjier’s haunting ‘Hymn’

In case you haven’t come across them before Tanjier are Mick Killen, Tommy Buckley and Ronan Lynch and they create dark electro-pop lurking in the shadows; the sound of isolation in orange dimly lit city streets. They are a trio based in Dublin, Ireland. Previously the band have tackled issues like homelessness, addiction and mental health. Their new single ‘Hymn’ musically documents the growth of the band’s sound which shimmers and pops. Skillfully employing their influences from Talos and James Vincent McMurrow into their own particular niche with haunting lyrics and growling guitar. Lyrically the band continue to hone their songwriting and delve into the darker recesses of human nature. Setting a scene of obsession and infatuation as the protagonist struggles with their lust for a prostitute and their own sexual desires. Tanjier play: October 17 – Ruby Sessions October 20 – Sin...

In Tua Nua head on tour

It was 30 years ago this year that ‘In Tua Nua’ supported U2 on the European leg of The Joshua Tree Tour. They are now setting out on their first Irish Tour since 1988. The band toured extensively throughout Europe and the US during the 1980’s promoting their albums “Vaudeville” and “The Long Acre”. During the 80s In Tua Nua had 9 top 20 singles here in Ireland. One of Ireland’s premier live acts, they shared stages with Bob Dylan (Slane), Fleetwood Mac, and Eurythmics to name but a few while also opening on stadium tours for Simple Minds and of course U2. In Tua Nua reformed for some gigs in 2004 and then again in 2012 when they played The Electric Picnic. What have they been up to? Lead singer ‘Leslie Dowdall’ released two solo albums and had a smash hit with her song ‘Wonderful Thing’. Leslie tours Ireland constantly with wing man Mike Hanrahan and plays regularly in Spain also. Singer/drummer ‘Paul Byrne’ who wrote the majority of ITN songs released his critically acclaimed solo album ‘Cruel & Tender Ways’ in 2014. Also is a member of The Drays and The Guilty Party. Bassist ‘Jack Dublin’ formed the studio project Audiokiss. Their album was successful in Italy while recent single ‘I Don’t Wanna Say’ featuring Megan Burke charted in the US digital charts. Paul and Jack first played together in Deaf Actor in 1980 before forming In Tua Nua in 1983. They have since been banging out beats for Rocky de Valera and The Gravediggers, The Guilty Party and Shane McGowan and The Shane Gang making them one of Ireland’s longest running rhythm sections. The new line up includes Rosie MacKenzie, a talented young fiddle player from Canada based in Dingle, Sarge O’Hara ex The Mod Ls on Keys, Dave McGinley ex Eugene/Precious Stones on Guitar, and Leo Rickard and Martin Nolan will share the uilleann pipe role (at different gigs). In 2012 Leslie, Paul and Jack went into the studio and re-recorded a version of ‘All I Wanted’. Their most successful single from the 80s, it had reached number 69 in the UK charts and became a college radio hit across the US. Other notable singles were ‘Seven Into The Sea’, ‘Heaven Can Wait’, ‘Somebody To Love’, ‘Coming Thru’ and ‘Don’t Fear Me Now’. Also, in 2012 Virgin/EMI released the albums ‘Vaudaville’ and ‘The Long Acre’ on iTunes and Spotify. New Plugd space to open October 13

Cork’s much-loved record shop Plugd, originally founded by Jim Horgan back in 2001, will be reopening for business upstairs at The Roundy, Castle Street, this month.   Jim said: “It has been great working with Emma and Frank in the Roundy these last months. We have big plans for the space and we are excited about collaborating with Cork’s creative community to make great things happen.  Upstairs at the Roundy will function as a record and print store, café, gallery, and event space, four days a week; and we’ll be developing new ideas along the way. I’m really looking forward to having Plugd back in action and welcoming back friends and familiar faces.” Since first opening on Washington Street some sixteen years ago, Horgan’s emporium has been an intrinsic part of Cork’s music community. Plugd Records, and its sister café Gulpd, had both operated out of the Triskel Arts Centre for the past six years, hosting regular concerts and events with local and international artists and musicians, until the premises’ closure in June.   Following meetings with The Roundy’s promoter Emma Kelly (Merakindie) and owner Frank Bradley, Plugd has found a new home, and will be back selling vinyl as well as expanding into independent publications and limited prints. In addition to this, Jim will be working with Emma in programming events in The Roundy. The space will also host exhibitions curated by Izabela Szczutkowska and Mick O’Shea.   Plugd’s new home Upstairs at The Roundy will be open from Saturday October 13th. To celebrate the official relaunch, Emma and Jim have a programmed a weekender of events featuring Lakerama, Outsider YP, Robedoor, ooSe, HEX and Gadget & The Cloud.   Emma commented: “I’m delighted to be working with Jimmy, big respect for what he created in Gulpd & Plugd, it became such an important place for a lot of people, so we’re both very happy to be bringing that space to a new home. Frank (who runs the The Roundy) has been fantastic. His open mindedness, support and enthusiasm has been so important in making this happen, everything is coming together really well. We want this to be a place where everybody feels comfortable coming into, we’ve got great gigs lined up for the next couple of months, with an eclectic mix of genres.”   Following several recent closures and relocations of artistic spaces in Cork there has been a lot of discussion about the lack of available cultural venues in the city. Plugd’s relaunch will go some way towards filling that void....

Bobby Green gets dirty with new double release from Fontaines

Review by Bobby Green If you’re looking for a groove so dirty that it’s going to reach inside your guts and shake your very foundations then look no further than Fountaines double A side 7” single ‘Hurricane Laughter / Winter In The Sun.’ This infectious Dublin 5 piece outfit delighted us earlier this year with ‘Liberty Bell’ but have really stepped it up a notch with ‘Hurricane Laughter’ This could well be musician.ie’s single of the year with its gloriously flamboyant video perfectly painting a visual surreal accompaniment to this psychedelic romp with a hook so naughty it should have an 18 certificate. A superb single with a superb video. ‘Winter in the Sun’ has a more familiar Fontaines sound full of blatant Dublin attitude, but I honestly believe that it might get overshadowed by the quality of its shared billing. Catch Fontaines live as they tour Ireland to promote the new single. Sat 7th October- The Button Factory- “Hurricane Laughter/Winter In The Sun” Launch. Thu 12th October- Crane Lane Theatre- Cork Fri 13th October- Brewery Corner- Kilkenny Sat 14th October- The Loft, Galway Wed 18th October- The Shacklewell Arms, London (Fierce Panda/Club Fandango Present) Fri 27th October- Mike The Pies- Listowel, Co.
