If you had as busy a Christmas season as I did then you may have missed the debut single launch of The Art Crimes Band. Fortunately, they got onto me to make sure I didn’t miss out. The single ‘Love for a Lark’ was released in November but was first launched at this year’s Guinness Jazz festival in Cork. The group often collaborating with Jazz and Burlesque musicians produced one of the largest burlesque shows for the festival. In their own right the band specialise in RnB, Funk, Soul, Jazz and Rock however this single and its B-side ‘Mirror and Mirror’ are firmly in the jazz end of the spectrum.
With a full complement of brass instruments ‘Love for a Lark’ opens with a fun interplay between brass and bass before Grace McMahon takes over on vocals. In contrast ‘Mirror Mirror’ is softer and sultry. The Art Crimes deservedly have attracted a huge following and there is no doubt listening to this single they are an assured and entertaining live act.
You can check them out as The Art Crimes play The Poor Relation Grocery and Pub, Parnell Place, Cork January 17th.
