Singer/Songwriter Dave Murphy reviews Ben Glover’s latest release.
To me the outstanding song on Ben Glover’s new album is BLACKBIRDS – a compelling story unfolds like a play by O’Neill. Strong emotions are at play:
shadows in the shadows”
ungratefull unlucky and untrue”
It tells of the doom of a final generation and is sung well by Ben and the female backing vocalist
THE WORLD IS A DANGEROUS PLACE has a warm arrangement:
dogs in the distance”
long forgotten prayers”
when you sell your soul it leaves a dark hole”
In this song a hollowness is portrayed – it is not till the third track that the album really takes off
TOO LONG GONE
Has a strong chorus, and great electric guitar. The melody is akin to PART MAN PART MONKEY and this song is uplifting all the way through.
TRUE LOVE IS BREAKING MY HEART
This track has great slide guitar, with singing remenicent of The Waterboys – a great CISCO HUSTON howl…. very American
This is a powerfull song and it’s got beat:
worn out like a suitcase”
prisoner of my history”
Yet again, great guitarwork.
THE MISSISSIPPI TURNS BLUE is a pure tribute to the EVERLY BROTHERS
TAKE AND PAY
Features a driving beat and great guitar:
if the devil did exist he would want us to feel sorry for him”
HOW MUCH LONGER CAN WE BEND kicks off with a strong accoustic guitar intro. This is a quiet spoken song, with astrong melody – beautiful in ways.
streets and stars collide”
SING A SONG BOYS would liven up any gig
NEW YEARS DAY is emotive and gentle. It has it’s own majestic sweep and a is fitting ending to a compelling album.
The album was recorded in Ireland, after a number of previous recordings in the States. The recording band featured Ben, and a combination of stateside and Irish players. Ben says of the album:
“It was a very stripped down, very honest way to bring these songs to life. I wanted to record in the most personal way possible so it was perfect to make this album with four of my closest friends in the house I spent a lot of time growing up in. I wanted there to be as little as possible between me and the songs and that’s why we recorded it live and raw. We just set up in a circle in the living room, lit a turf fire, opened some Bushmills and pressed record. It felt just like all the sessions I grew up playing in that house over years. The Atlantic Ocean is what we looked out on every day while we made the album and without a doubt its presence and the rugged landscape of Donegal is huge on these recordings.”
The release date is Sept 1st
