After a busy 2017 including events in venues and festivals all over Cork County, and an appearance at February’s Quarter Block Party festival, #CorkLovesMusic presents the latest in a series of talk and performance events, designed to open up discussion and provide a place to share ideas in Cork music.
In a new partnership with UCC’s Áras na Mac Léinn (Student Centre), #CorkLovesMusic and UCC Music Society are proud to present their debut event on campus over the course of two nights, on Wednesday April 11th and Thursday April 12th, featuring a variety of speakers and musical performers.
Wednesday April 11th sees #CorkLovesMusic’s series of talk and discussion events take to the Upstairs Café at the Student Centre, with speakers including Choice Prize nominee Bantum, Hard Working Class Heroes festival head Angela Dorgan, Cork hip-hop legend Stevie G. and UCC LGBT Society head Kelly Doherty; plus a discussion panel and live performances from singer-songwriters Cara Kursh, Ronan Mansfield, and more to be confirmed in the run-up. Thursday April 12th, meanwhile, is the first in a new series of showcase gigs at UCC’s New Bar, a venue rapidly establishing itself as a link between UCC’s student culture and the wider music community in Cork. Launching her debut album ‘Songs for Sad People to Dance To’, Doherty, aka Gadget and the Cloud, brings her own brand of ambient beatsiness to campus, with support from Corkonian lo-fi producer Papa Floral and ambient improviser Momputer (Eamon Ivri, also of Lighght). This event is the centre of a busy April for #CorkLovesMusic: in addition to these events, #CorkLovesMusic will be appearing as part of the spoken-word offering at It Takes a Village festival in Trabolgan, and getting prepared to contribute seminars to CIT Cork School of Music’s BA in Contemporary Music programme, with more announcements to come.
#CorkLovesMusic is a cooperative of music and media professionals, formed after TEDx CorkSalon’s CorkLovesMusic event in September 2016. Working in collaboration with local festivals like Sounds from a Safe Harbour, Quarter Block Party, Townlands Carnival and Cork Midsummer Festival, as well as community organisations like GroundFloor Studio, the group’s aim is to open up new conversations in and around Cork’s resurgent music community via its series of talk and performance events.
