Gillian McGee reviews debut EP from Raine

Review by Gillian McGee

Raine (Lorraine Hogan) who is a Cork based artist has just released her self titled debut EP and it’s truly a thing of beauty.  Jam packed with atmosphere, imagery and a real soundtrack vibe there is no doubt a very personal style to these songs . All backed up her haunting vocals and strong songwriting you will be left with a real lasting impression after just one listen.

The songs in Raine cover a range of topics but are tied together with a deep personal undertow.  Wake up is a world class song written about Raine’s friend who had fallen into a coma.  There is really gut wrenching plea to the song and the production on it (and the entire EP) is just gorgeous.  Burnt  and Honey Baby are both catchy and full of attitude and deal with affairs of the heart and finding her inner strength. Breathe Me featuring some beautiful cello is entirely sensual and wraps you up in a floating cocoon. The entire EP is a far cry from your typical understanding of a singer songwriter, it’s on another level and  if you are a fan of bands like the XX then this ep is definitely for you. It’s important too to say that these are very real songs full of emotion and beautiful lyrics.

Raine will launch her debut EP in Aula Maxima at University College Cork on Wednesday October 11th with a full band. Her performance will be accompanied with a video project and it’s reflected in these songs that she is really a multidisciplinary artist with a very interesting and bright future
