Joey Ryan was the first guest on my radio show The Forum on UCC98.3FM more than a few years ago as he took his first tentative steps into songwriting with his debut solo album “Morning Will Come Soon”. Showing great promise as a songwriter he then went and formed the Joey Ryan Trio with Ben Cooper and Paul Dowling who played support for the likes of Jack L, Mick Flannery and Alabama 3.
All these experiences have shaped the Wexford man and he has come along when since I heard that first album, always rock and roll but that debut was softer and almost folk in feel than his later records with the Joey Ryan Trio. With this current solo project “Fall Through The Night” out May 6th and the first single from that album “Tenderly” you can hear how much he has grown as a writer, a singer and a performer. He has grown in confidence and is ready to take his place amongst those who have inspired him.
“Tenderly” has bluesy guitar intersecting Joey’s rock vocals with Americana touches including a subtle but well placed organ riff. Ryan’s vocals are deep, smooth and trust me you will be humming the line “My Baby don’t cry for me” for the rest of the day. The video for “Tenderly” was shot and directed by Colm Walsh of Clap Media. I think this song is going to do big things for Joey Ryan.
