Following an extensive nationwide search, ten semi-finalists have been chosen in the Le Crunch Apple of My Eye song contest. Hundreds of young musicians from across the country entered the talent search and from a huge pool of songs, the final ten will be whittled down to five who will play live in the National Final at Whelan’s in Dublin on Wednesday March 14th.
Having established itself as one of Ireland’s most popular song contests, thousands of promising Irish musicians have entered the competition since its inception in 2013, many of whom have continued on to aspiring careers in the music industry, such as Stephanie Rainey, Hvmmingbird and Brave Giant.
Running in partnership with Ireland’s leading digital platform, JOE, the Le Crunch Apple of My Eye semi-finalists now have an opportunity to ask their fans to play a part as two of the final five spots will be decided by a public vote, taking place on Joe.ie. A panel of industry judges will select the final three and then officiate at the live final taking place at Dublin’s iconic music venue, Whelan’s.
The judges for this year’s competition include one of this country’s finest front women, Jess Kavanagh from BARQ, rising singer songwriter Jack O’Rourke, and JOEshow presenter, Paddy McKenna. Not only will the winner walk away with a cash prize of €1500, they will also be guaranteed a slot at one of Ireland’s best music events this summer – Indiependence Music & Arts Festival.
Songwriter Jack O’Rourke said that he is, “looking forward to seeing how the semi-finalists fare with the public vote and particularly seeing how the finalists handle the pressure in front of a crowd in a live setting like Whelan’s. Judging from the standard of previous years, we’re in for a treat on March 14th.”
The ten semi-finalists are:
- The Rush – ‘Cocoon’ by Milky Chance
- Mongoose – ‘Bullet Proof’ by La Roux
- Liam Geddes – ‘Stargazing’ by Kygo ft. Justin Jesso
