Dublin outfit Penrose are a little like a Transformer, starting out as a duo in 2013 the band now comprises of five members (founding member Darragh McGrane along with Caolan Fitzsimons, Mark Bolger, Donal Bowens and Benji Hayes) which has seen the band’s success rise and their reputation build as one of Ireland’s legit Indie/Rock bands.
Having toured with the likes of Jack L, The Original Rude Boys, The Mighty Stef ,Paddy Casey, From the Jam and The Minutes and counting The Beatles, ELO, Marc Bolan and The Verve as influences Penrose have some serious credentials behind them. They released their debut EP “ Live for the Dream” last July along with critically acclaimed single “Melody”. Now the band are back with a new single, a rigorous tour and a new album in the works.
“Sign On” is the new single released May 12th and the band are launching it with a headline gig in the Grand Social this weekend, May 21st. The track opens with an almost Clash like intro and reminds me of Oasis, or is it the resemblance to the two brothers that Darragh and Donal bear in the video that gives this impression. But the track has a definite summer vibe, rhythmic guitar and a pounding beat with plenty of harmonies and uplifting sing along moments. “How could you ever change the weather // If the cold wing left you smiling // To sign your life away” sings McGrane in the chorus as the track discusses our obsession with material things rather than spiritual fulfillment. This single is going to be huge for Penrose and will get the crowd going at their many festival performances this summer. The video stars Irish actor Bryan Quinn as a ne’er do well character who discovers the error of his ways. Check it out below.
