Review by Bobby Green
I just love it when you can tell that a song is going to be fabulous long before the 1st verse has imprinted itself on your cerebral cortex and started worming its way around your memories. “Betty Machete” has that very distinct sound and will have you singing along before the end of the bridge. It has a swagger about it that’s impossible not to fall into, and just when you think it’s going to kick you over it pulls you in for another embrace before stomping all over you again.
Swords new album Tidal Waves is due out towards the end of the year and promises to be one to look out for if “Betty Machete” is anything to go by. The band plan to release a few more tracks from the album before its release then tour live to support the album.
There is so much quality around right now on the music scene in Ireland. It has been decades since there was such a high output of quality music coming from this musical nation. The recent debates about radio stations playing more contemporary Irish music should stretch to all genres of musical talent from these shores. It’s time we push more support towards Irish bands, not just because it’s the right thing to do but because the quality demands it.
With the right airplay “Betty Machete” could be that summer smash that could catapult Swords into the mainframe of the Irish music scene and make Tidal Waves a late contender for album of the year.
