Celebrating 10 years of the Ballincollig Winter Music Festival

Now in its tenth year and well established as one of Ireland’s premier music events, The Ballincollig Winter Music Festival returns in January 2019, with a host of fantastic national and international headline artists in concert at the intimate Upstairs at The White Horse music venue. The weekend events include free music events, traditional Irish music sessions, workshops and an expanded series of Community Events, to bring the festival to every corner of the community.

For this very special edition of the festival, a number of previous headliners will make return appearances including Tim O’Brien, Donal Lunny and The Voice Squad while some top class artists will grace the Ballincollig stage for the first time, not least among them, Jerry Douglas of the famed Alison Krauss and Union Station.

Retro country soul outfit THE DELINES get proceedings underway on Wednesday 23rd January. Hailing from Portland, Oregon, The Delines features vocalist Amy Boone and acclaimed novelist and songwriter, Willy Vlautin (Lean on Pete).

Thursday 24th will see Dublin singer-songwriter CATHY DAVEY take to The White Horse stage. Stripping it right back to the bare bones, Cathy will perform songs from her fifth and latest album Live at Dublin Unitarian Church, which captures the magic of Cathy’s music with favourites ‘Sing For Your Supper’, ‘Little Re’d and ‘Moving’, all featuring on the set.

On the same night, WHITE HORSE GUITAR CLUB perform at The Cork Opera House for what promises to be a sell-out show with some very special guests . . .

Friday night’s concert celebrates 10 years of The Ballincollig Winter Music Festival with a star-studded line up that features the legendary Andy Irvine, regular visitors to The White Horse DONAL LUNNY and PADDY GLACKIN as well as rising folk star LISA O’NEILL. The gig will take the form of a song cycle and more names are set to be added to the line-up over the coming weeks!

Saturday night’s concert is set to be a truly special one with 14 time Grammy award winning Dobro player JERRY DOUGLAS performing upstairs with support from Cork’s own GREENSHINE. Called “Dobro’s matchless contemporary master” by The New York Times, Douglas’ sound graces more than 1500 albums with artists such as Garth Brooks, George Jones, Paul Simon, Little Big Town, James Taylor, Emmylou Harris, Elvis Costello, Earl Scruggs, Ray Charles, Dierks Bentley, and Tommy Emmanuel, among many others. He is also a member of groundbreaking ensemble Alison Krauss and Union Station.

Grammy award winning West Virginian TIM O’BRIEN will close proceedings on Sunday 27th January with JAN FABRICIUS, delivering their unique style of old time and bluegrass music. Prior to that THE VOICE SQUAD will open the night. The unique blend of Fran McPhail’s and Phil Callery’s tenor voices with the bass of Gerry Cullen, along with their own particular arrangements of great folk songs has made them one of the most distinctive unaccompanied singing groups of recent times.

“We’re really looking forward to what will be our 10th Ballincollig Winter Music Festival” says festival organiser Joe Carey. “We have a new addition of a Community Events programme, kindly support by the Cork City Council, which we will be announcing details of in the coming weeks.”
